National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

NCCT is an independent certification organization that has tested more than 240,000 individuals throughout the United States since 1989 for competency in these roles:
  • Medical Assistant
  • Phlebotomy Technician
  • Insurance and Coding Specialist
  • Medical Office Assistant
  • Patient Care Technician
  • ECG Technician
  • Tech in Surgery
  • Certified Postsecondary Instructor
For most NCCT certifications there are two qualifying routes, allowing graduates of approved educational programs or individuals with qualifying work experience to apply. To earn an NCCT credential, candidates must meet all eligibility requirements and pass an examination based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities required at job entry. NCCT certification testing is designed to validate candidate competence, not only for the employers that hire them but for the public good.

A test is only as good as its development and administration processes. NCCT certification examination development begins with job analysis. NCCT solicits input from practitioners, employers, instructors, schools/colleges, programs, organizations, accrediting bodies, and others before determining which knowledge, skills, and abilities are significant to the role. This information guides the formation of test specifications and content outlines, from which the question bank is prepared. Exams are administered at test sites across the United States and proctored by autonomous individuals (i.e. with no vested interest in results) to ensure test content security. Examinee results are continuously monitored. All of these things help to ensure that NCCT tests are valid for their intended purpose.

While some certifying agencies might offer lifetime certification to applicants who pass a single exam, NCCT does not. Certificants are required to complete a minimum of 14 clock hours of approved continuing education annually to update their knowledge and maintain active status. Recertification is the final link in the chain of processes that brings credibility to our credentials.
