We would like to recognize the following certified professional.
Congratulations on your continued success.

Christina Egeland  - Aloha, OR

Every month NCCT likes to recognize a certified member of our community. This month we would like to highlight Christina Egeland. Christina has been a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) for 15 years! You can read more of her story below.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite part of the job is interacting with patients and their family members. Being able to comfort the patient and/or their family during times of stress and sadness or celebrate when good news came to them is extremely rewarding.

Why have you stayed certified for so long?

I have stayed certified for so long because it's important to learn new information and review other information you have already learned in order to give the best care possible. I also believe in life-long learning and maintaining a certification is one way to continue that process.

Can you share a story that stands out in your mind that has affected you professionally?

There are so many stories that have affected me but one I think that people might learn from is about confidentiality. This story occurred prior to the HIPAA regulations but it is still relevant today. A woman was standing in the back of a full elevator when two physicians started talking about a case they were involved with. They used the patient name, talked about the diagnosis, and stated that the patient wouldn't live longer than 6 more months. They also argued about whose turn it was to tell the family. The woman who the physicians did not see, was the mother of the patient. She found out that her child was dying while in an elevator full of strangers.

Just always remember that you don't know who is watching what you do or listening to what you say so be mindful of that always.

Do you have any advice for people who have just received their certification for the first time?

Take a deep breath and keep up with your continuing education units. Remember that being certified is worth it and by maintaining it, you show employers that you are willing and able to successfully complete your job with up-to-date information.

Christina, you show true dedication to your field and we are proud to be a part of your journey.
